Errol Collen – proofreading, editing, translating.

I was born on a farm in the Vryburg district of  what was then the Northern Cape (now the North West Province) of South Africa in 1942. My mother home-schooled me until I was able to go to primary school in Vryburg as a weekly boarder. Later I was a boarder at Kimberley Boys’ High School.

After I left school I travelled abroad and lived and worked for several years in England, Holland and Iceland. When I returned to South Africa, I began my studies at UNISA (University of South Africa), majoring in English and Linguistics for the BA degree. I began working as a translator at the Chamber of Mines, Johannesburg in 1974, completed BA (Honours) in Linguistics and wrote a disseration for the MA  in Linguistics (awarded cum laude) in 1979.

I worked at the Chamber of Mines until 1995, by which time I was Chief Translator there. When the Chamber decided to close the translations department I became a freelance translator, editor, proofreader and writer. Much of my work since then has been for Finweek, the bilingual financial magazine.

As a highly experienced language practitioner, fluent in English and Afrikaans, I can offer the highest quality of work in this field at very reasonable rates.
